As an F-1 student, you must regularly report any changes that may affect your Form I-20  to your designated school official (DSO)  also known as your International Student Advisor.  This will ensure that all your information is correct on your SEVIS record and you are able to continue maintaining your legal status in the U.S: 

Examples of updates on I:20

  • Part-Time Border Commuter: Require a new I-20 every semester
  • Academic: Change in major
  • Biographical: Change in name
  • Dependents: Addition of F2 dependent
  • Financial: Remove Border Commuter Status
  • Financial: Significant change to financial support such as an addition or loss of a GRA or GTA
  • OPT: Need a new I-20 due to update on the SEVP portal
